1. Why is my dog so anxious?

You’re doing a good thing by taking care of a dog who otherwise might not experience the love and comfort you are providing. But you have to remember, most dogs were not bred to be house pets, and thus experience a great deal of stress and anxiety trying to be something that nature has not prepared them to be.

It’s easy to forget that our canine friends descended from wild animals. But thousands of years ago life for the family dog was very different. They were pack animals, and existed similar to the way wolves do today, spending 20 hours a day hunting, scavenging and socializing with the other dogs in their pack. Today, their lives couldn’t be more different.

Today, most dogs will inevitably spend long hours alone and idle. Few dogs continue to do the work they were bred for, and even mixed breeds show signs of what experts call “repressed instinctual tendencies.” This inevitably leads to anxieties, like excessive chewing, licking, barking, even incontinence.

How can I help my dog?

Even happy, well-adjusted dogs can become anxious or fearful. Dogs like to know what to expect everyday, both from their owners and from their household environments. A Happier Dog

The unique symptoms your dog may be exhibiting – from excessive barking, anxiety, chewing to aggression, growling and biting – can have their source in several different behavior issues or chemical imbalances, some more severe than others. Poyz’s calming remedies are formulated to help relieve symptoms both temporarily and long term by improving the particular neurochemistry that influences negative behavior. Like anti-depressants, one of the benefits of our formulations is that by relieving the undesirable symptoms one can better address the underlying anxiety and behavioral habits that gave rise to the symptoms in the first place. We strongly encourage you to work with your dog and local dog experts to develop a plan to modify your dog’s behavior through training, diet, exercise and – most of all – patience!

There are literally hundreds of books on how to train your dog and deal with particular issues. We strongly urge you to check them out. We find the most important principle to keep in mind is that dogs are essentially pack animals, that their fate depends on their place in the pack (and securing that place) and the pack’s survival. Understanding these simple motivations to protect the pack from predators and competition while simultaneously securing one’s place in it, goes far to explain why dogs behave the way they do – and might even explain why humans do as well!

Leader of the Pack

It also explains why many dogs when left alone experience anxiety. Being alone is not a natural state for dogs and conflicts with their instinctual urges. Alienated from the pack, they become restless, anxious, fearful, and experience constant adrenalin rushes because of their heightened stressful state. One reason our instant formula is so successful is because it relieves the outward symptoms of this stress, calming your dog so they can cope better with the separation, which they will gradually get adjusted to. Naturally the less you can leave your dog alone the better, and it is always nice to have friends who can walk your dog at some point during the day. Many of us, however, don’t have these options. Because dogs are pack animals, they see you and each family member in terms of a social hierarchy. It is therefore important that you establish yourself and other members of the family as the Alpha. What many regard as playfulness in dogs is actually an elaborate, instinctual ritual to establish dominance over other pack members. Understand that in the wild, where a dog stands in regards to the other pack members ultimately determines its survival and role in the pack. It is therefore important that when you socially engage with your dog through play, walks, training or even feedings, that you maintain an alpha posture. You and Your Dog

Many experts have different opinions on how to interact with your dog so that your dog understands that it is not the alpha – a problem that can be big or small depending on the dog’s personality. We encourage you to seek out these opinions and work with your dog to establish your own comfort levels whether through obedience school or alternatives means of training your dog. In the long run, this will make life with your dog much more pleasant and enjoyable. Dogs are not unlike children. They need to know their boundaries in order to feel safe, and they will test those boundaries in order to know that they are secure and stable.
